The school was established in 1926 as a primary school. The enlightened people of the area made significant contributions to its development, and their dedication played a vital role in its growth and smooth functioning over the years.
In 1957, the school was upgraded to the Middle standard. Later, in 1999, it was further upgraded to a High School by the Government of Himachal Pradesh.
During this period, one of the school’s distinguished alumni, Shri Jitendra Kumar, rose to the rank of Captain in the Indian Army. He made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting terrorists at Lal Chowk, Srinagar, during the Kargil War.
As a mark of respect and tribute to his bravery, the Government of Himachal Pradesh formally named the institution Shaheed Jitendra Memorial Government High School, Sohari in 2000.
In 2011, the school was further upgraded to a Government Senior Secondary School, expanding its academic scope and opportunities for students. The school has 4 blocks. It has 23 rooms and a multi purpose hall and all the classrooms are in well condition. The school has well maintained ICT lab, Agriculture lab, Science Lab and Sports room.
In 2025, the school was selected by the Himachal Pradesh Government for affiliation with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The affiliation was formally granted on 09 December 2025. The school has been assigned Affiliation Number 620320 and School Code 44422 (vide Letter No. CBSE/620320/WS-00451-2627/2026-27).
The CBSE curriculum, from Bal Vatika to Class 12 (10+2), has been implemented with effect from 1st April 2026, marking a new chapter in the institution’s academic journey
